Why is Tzu-Chen an EMDR Therapist?

The first time I heard of EMDR was in a counseling class in Taiwan back in 2011. The professor was talking about how Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR, established the modality for treating trauma. Later, I realized that EMDR already has a history in Taiwan for many years.

Due to the unique geographic position Taiwan is located, people are used to earthquakes and typhoons. In September 21, 1999, Taiwan had a traumatic earthquake which caused over 2,000 death and crashed 50,000 houses into ashes. I was 12 years old at that time, and I still vividly remember the way my bed shook and the impact it has left us. The professor in my counseling class was the first person to introduce EMDR to Taiwan. She trained several groups of mental health professionals in response to the population who were mostly physically and mentally affected by the earthquake.

And I continue hearing about EMDR, especially here in the United States (which makes sense, since EMDR was born and raised in the US). Last year, I finally had the chance to receive the training, and have become passionate about using it. To me, EMDR gives a scientific-based solution to treat trauma. I also personally find EMDR very helpful in alleviating stress and anxiety. For example, when I am having trouble sleeping, bilateral techniques slow my heart rate and help me relax (activates parasympathetic nervous system). I strive to do what I preach, and I am happy to introduce EMDR to you.
