Why does Laura love EMDR?
When I began my career to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor I felt that, while I had a great education, background and experience, I still felt a little lost. I did not feel anchored to any particular methods of counseling. I felt that I was not as effective as I could be. I wanted something that I could use across the board that brought results.
I found Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) by accident during a Google search for practices to help those with anxiety. Quickly, EMDR took over my search history. I loved that it is scientifically backed and has research to support its use across the board in counseling. At first I did not believe the claims I read about its effectiveness. I was suspicious and doubtful so I went for a few sessions of EMDR myself. I was hooked! I was sleeping better, feeling better, and finding myself calmer. I signed up for the first available training.
Today I use EMDR in session for a variety of clients’ challenges. I find the relief that EMDR provides to be what keeps me using this method of counseling. EMDR, I feel, empowers clients to face whatever is troubling them. Everyone who comes into counseling deserves a calm safe space to work on their concerns, and EMDR helps to provide that.
